Resumo
Autism is a pervasive development disorder characterized by impairment in three areas: sociability, communication and repetitive behaviors, having a multicausal etiology, including genetic and environmental agents. In the late years, the seizures treatment with VPA during pregnancy has been related to higher occurrence of autism. In order to investigate the possible causes of autism, animal models had been used with expressive results. This study explores the impact in the sociability development in animals exposed to VPA during gestation. Pregnant rats were treated VPA in the 9th day of gestation and social behavior of the offspring were analyzed. The results showed a significant impairment in several forms of social behavior. Recent publications show abnormal serotonin neuron migration associated with VPA which might be underlying the mechanisms of these behaviors.
