Since the most remote times, the horse and the man had their lives intertwined. From a power source to a best friend, the relationship of these two beings has evolved. Used in wars, farm services, the horse's skills favored the emergence of equestrian events, also enabling the creation of new jobs, such as hippie instructors, keepers and athletes. However, if on the one hand the animal is seen as an important part of the whole, receiving all the care and love it deserves, on the other hand it is also seen as a “machine” for others; as a being who does not suffer pain and has no feelings, and therefore suffers excessive blows from spurs and whips, often unnecessary. The problem starts with the statement that the simple fact of using these instruments is considered mistreatment, which is not true. Another relevant point is the laws, penalties created and applied by the Legislative, Judiciary and by the bodies responsible for the supervision and orientation of equestrian sports, which are not satisfactory, with regard to the punishment of violators. In addition to the issues described above, the present work also brings what must be done to ensure the protection and well-being of horses.
