Resumo
Studies indicate high rates of children and adolescents with psychiatric disorders who do not
have access to mental health services (13-20%), showing their detrimental effects on the life
trajectory of this public. Currently, Brazil has a Psychosocial Care Network (RAPS) that
integrates the Unified Health System (SUS) and is made up of services and equipment aimed at mental health, but high rates of treatment abandonment seem to be common in services considered reference. Thus, this research aimed to describe the profile of the care received and the barriers that hinder access to treatment for adolescents with mental health problems and to identify the sociodemographic factors related to the barriers. A study was carried out with the protocol that includes standardized instruments, including the Service Assessment for Children and Adolescents (SACA) questionnaire applied through telephone contact with 96 parents / guardians of children and adolescents from 9 to 16 years old, who started treatment at the Outpatient Clinic of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at a specific hospital in the city of São Paulo. Most of the interviews were answered by biological mothers who were between 30 and 71 years old and most of them had completed higher education, with or without graduate school, with total family income between R $ 100.00 and R $ 15,000.00. In this research, the most used formal health service due to emotional and behavioral problems in adolescence was the mental health clinic. Among informal services, the demand for services related to religion was the most significant. The use of school services was uncommon. In addition, no differences were identified with regard to access to mental health services according to the sex of children / adolescents. The costs of treatment and detachment were the main barriers to access to mental health services, as well as the long waiting time for a place. In short, the data show that there are several barriers that make it difficult for children and adolescents to contact mental health services, mainly because there is a lack of psychology services in places of reference for the population, who often need to use private or informal services.
