Resumo
This thesis investigates productions and testimonies by Elisa Lispector and Clarice
Lispector related to Jewish and Christian themes. The methodological orientation of this
work goes through the examination of the authors' production, as well as the bibliographic
research of their respective critical fortunes, guided by theoretical foundations related to
the issues of literary theory. Structured in seven chapters, preceded by introduction and
followed by final considerations, this investigation has the objective to clarify possible
features of a testimonial aspect to Judaism, conditioned to Elisa, and of a writing limited
to vestiges of the same religious component attributed to Clarice. Here, it is interpreted
that Elisa raises her production by highlighting Jewish particularities in her characters
and, to a certain extent, inserting, in the textual materiality, some degree of prejudice in
relation to Christianity; On the contrary, Clarice demarcates Jewish traits in her
production, erasing Judaism in many ways as a model of faith or life, while tonifying an
accentuated dialogue with the evangelistic figures. Through this understanding, the
reading hypothesis of this study is based on a comparative perspective linked to a writing
of Jewish themes. In the case of the authors, Elisa and Clarice, the first recognizes herself
as Jewish, and there is a textual explicit and equally relevant dynamic in her bookkeeping.
Elisa, in a conscious decision, assumes the condition of being a Jew as a relevant part of
her literary creation. Differently, Clarice takes herself away, in her work, from this
nomenclature and situation. Based on the comparison between the writers 'texts,
therefore, it is proposed to investigate disparate aspects of the authors' production with
respect to the religious themes. Therefore, the specific objectives are to analyze how Elisa
Lispector appropriates her Jewish tradition to materialize her characters, as well as how
Clarice Lispector criticizes the same themes. The results obtained indicate that Clarice
detaches herself from Judaism in her writing and she silences it in her experience;
conversely, Elisa witnesses this condition explicitly and intentionally. Interpretation
unfolded by the analyzes referring to the treatment that the sisters evoke in their
productions about Christianity. Elisa rejects the Christian theme in her production, and
Clarice welcomes it, however she does it with such acute criticism. Among the theorists
who support the interpretations extended in this work analyzes, there is the remarkable
contribution of Amós Oz and Faina Oz-Salberger, Berta Waldman, Carlos Mendes de
Sousa, Edward Said, Frederico Lourenço, Mikhail Bakhtin, Nádia Battella Gotlib, Regina
Igel and Sholomo Sand.
