Special Education is the school modality offered to students with disabilities, pervasive developmental disorders and high abilities or intellectual giftedness and should preferably take place in regular education. All students have to learn together in the same room and it is the school‟s responsibility to consider the differences, the needs and individual requests, supplying them through resources, methodologies, contents and materials in order to students have access to the school curriculum at the correct age. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a proposal that points to the challenges and takes advantages of the inherent opportunities in a great variability of students, offering alternative ways to access the curriculum. To facilitates the learning process it is necessary to expand the chance of students participation and interaction. The idea is not to adapt the curriculum, but present it in order to meet everyone. The proposal suggests the access and the assurance of learning, based on the offer of multiples and diversified ways to organize and provide the scientific knowledges. The textbook is a resource that facilitates the knowledge acquisition and it is provided for by specific legislation in Brazilian schools. The “Programa Nacional do livro e do Material Didático” (National Book and Textbook Program), encourages the textbook production with accessibility features. In this way, the aim of the research was to adapt the first chapter of a textbook for the first grade of elementary school, based on the guidelines of the UDL and transforming it into a digital media. The adaptations made were focused on the offering of multiples ways of presentation, multiples ways of engagement and multiple ways of execution. The participants of the research were the first-grade students (N=7) of a private school in São José dos Campos. The students took a pre-test and a post-test, which objective was to gauge the rate of learning improvement after the intervention of the digital book. They answered a questionnaire to get data on their impressions and observations about the tool. Each student got a tablet and the data were collected by a screen print. The research was a case study which had as a result the academic performance improvement since the accessibility features, as the audio and the decrease of pedagogical barriers with the extra explanations, links and tips facilitated the access to the contenteng
