For the conservation of the environment, it is necessary to provide efficient alternatives for the disposal of solid waste and, mainly, for radioactive waste that can cause serious damage to the environment and society. Considering technical options for waste disposal, thermal plasma technology presents itself as an efficient possibility for disposal of radioactive waste. Therefore, this work aims to employ plasma technology for the proper disposal of radioactive waste, evaluating its impact on the reverse logistics network for this waste. This work includes the evaluation of the mass alteration of the materials processed in the plasma system by transferred arc, evaluation of the chemical properties of the process outputs, identification of the parameters optimized for the operation of the plasma system for disposal of the studied waste and evaluation of the effectiveness of implantation of the plasma treatment in the reverse logistics network. In addition to being supported by legislation, the reverse logistics structure is necessary to ensure environmentally correct disposal. Experiments were carried out with samples composed of various elements and isotopes such as Pb, Cs, I and Co, and after incineration, the slag from the process, and filters used in the gas outlet, were subjected to mass and SEM/EDS characterizations. Scenarios that simulated the allocation of the plasma reactor in the reverse logistics chain were also simulated considering the result of the mass reduction and it was found that it is feasible to allocate it in the sorting site and the logistical cost is high. With this work, it was possible to conclude before the established parameters, that the use of this technology is technically feasible, since there was a mass reduction of more than 50% of the samples used and the study also allowed the understanding of the behavior of the isotopes. It is recommended to advance in future studies addressing samples with different compositions, using other isotopes and new experimental conditions, seeking to know the behavior of the isotopes through other characterizations. It is also suggested to evaluate the energy efficiency of the system, studying whether there is effectiveness in the use of plasma technology given its energy consumption.eng
