dc.description.abstractInformation Technology (IT) has become more relevant in the management of organizations of all sizes and sectors of the economy. One of the important functions of IT is the knowledge management, which is closely related to Organizational Memory (OM). The use of IT services through its own resources or outsource them is a decision for each organization to make (Perez, 2006). This research aims to analyze the potential impacts of Outsourcing Information Technology Services in Organizational Memory in Higher Education Institutions (HEIs). To achieve this information, we have used qualitative research of exploratory nature, through structured and previously prepared script interviews with six managers of HEIs information technology and administrative areas, who use IT and with those who have somehow interacted with outsourcing of IT services. Initially, there was a review of the existing literature involving these two issues. For the analysis of the collected data we used the content analysis of the interviews conducted by the pre-analysis, the coding and the summarization of concepts and ultimately the development of the categories, as indicated by Bardin (2009). As a result it was observed that outsourcing of IT services can impact either in a positive, or in a negative way the OM of HEIs, and impacts on the organization as a whole. It was possible to understand the role of IT and its impact on the generation and retention of knowledge and memory of HEIs. It was also evident the need for effective management of outsourcing IT services, given the peculiarities of the educational sector as well as the notorious need for generation, transfer and perpetuation of MO in HEIs.eng
