This paper studies the crisis of the recording industry during the years 1980 and 1981, taking as its starting point the letters from the readers and the articles of the extinct SOMTRÊS magazine. We aim to understand how the popularization of new technologies, such as the cassette tape, changed the relationship of people with music, both the way to market and consume it, and how the specialized media understood the popularization of new technologies that allowed listeners to copy and play music illegally. These new technologies were perceived as the major culprits for the music industry crisis, and the media of the period gave little importance to other factors, such as the rise in oil prices and the political turmoil Brazil was experiencing. We questioned to what extent piracy was, in fact, responsible for the problems of the music industry. We highlight the contradictions in the media speech that at times fostered the ease of copying albums, and at other times blamed the crisis on the new technologies available in the period. We also point out the existence of a whole network of commerce, socialization and symbolic exchanges, tacitly accepted by artists and entrepreneurs of the music business. For this study, we applied a qualitative research of historiographical nature, interpreting the reports of the SOMTRÊS magazine in the light of authors as Renato Ortiz, Paul Friedlander, Fernando Novais, Marcelo Ridenti, John B. Thompson, José Ramos Tinhorão, Walter Benjamin, Peter Burke, and Márcia Tosta Dias, among others.eng
