Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the psychometric properties of an instrument to evaluate the emotional intelligence translated from English to Portuguese, in the Brazilian cultural context. It was administered to 334 participants of both sexes (41.9% males and 58.1 % females). They were university students of Psychology (42.8%), Communication and Arts (39.5%) and Civil Engineering (17.7%), with a mean age of 20.5 years old. (SD=3.3). The results indicated a good internal consistency for all scales of the instrument, with alpha coefficients varying from 0.636 to 0.918. Significant differences were also found between genders, favoring women, and between courses, favoring Psychology students. We conclude that the instrument presents good psychometric properties to be used with a population equivalent to this study.
