The mass incarceration in Brazil opened up statistical data showing that the imprisonment of women grew alarmingly between the years 2000 to 2016, with an increase of 656% of prisoners. The purpose of this article is to describe data on female incarceration, to outline the profile of imprisoned women in order to contextualize her in society, and then to list the reasons and hypotheses of this female prison boom. To this end, authors who studied the topic were studied and researched, in order to understand, even if in a subsidiary way in their research, the reasons for the dizzying growth of women prisoners in the last two decades. It is concluded that the cause of female incarceration has grown is multicausal, so that a possibility is not able to exhaust the research problem outlined, but it is noted that drug trafficking has a centralizing role in the lives of these women.
