This article explores the origins and development of bioethics in order to determine its possibility in light of the Philosophy of the Cosmonomic Idea by Herman Dooyeweerd. Bioethics is a discipline concerned with ethical issues in the life sciences and medicine which emerged from the influential contributions of Van Rensselaer Potter and André Hellegers. Potter and Hellegers proposed distinct visions for bioethics, one rooted in interdisciplinary collaboration to ensure human survival, and the other focused on applying existing ethical principles to biomedical problems. Dooyeweerd's philosophy, emphasizing the interrelatedness of various modal aspects of reality, provides a framework for assessing these approaches. Potter's vision of universal bioethics, based on biology, is critiqued for its potential reductionism. In contrast, Hellegers' approach, which aligns bioethics with established ethical principles, is viewed more favorably within Dooyeweerd's philosophical framework. This analysis offers insights into the philosophical foundations of bioethics and highlights the need to balance interdisciplinary perspectives and established ethical principles in bioethical discourse.
