The present work intends to verify the operation of the perceptual-cognitive apparatus and the senses that the visual language stimulates inthe observer for the interpretation. Understanding how the observer's starting point and the environment that is inserted influence individuality and logic when observing arts and the world as an entire, we are able to understand the linearity of the visual structures developed. Therefore, we used productions by Lygia Pape, a Brazilian multimedia artist, recognized for her works that were part of the Neo-Concrete Movement. Two pieces were selected for the work: “Divisor” (1968) and “Poemas visuais: Língua Apunhalada” (1968). With them, we are able to interpret how the understanding of observers who agreed to share their perceptions of them and praxis in society emerges.Knowing that individual perception is also composed of social insertion and stereotypes created in visual language as well, it becomes possible to perceive the referent and the verbal codes chosen to express it. Working with different opinions from different age groups, we can understand how and what are the motivations for making choices. Thus, the question that guided this research appearedhow the social practice, along with its perception/cognition does, lead to the fabrication of its “visual thinking” in front of Lygia Pape’s pieces. With these two points, we were able to capture the different meanings and possibilities of expressions according to the particular semiosis.Through this study, we will be able to assimilate how the perception of the senses of visual language and cognition are linked to the process of meaning, semiosis, without the manifestation of language directly. Understanding their way of perceiving and acting in the world, we understand their mechanisms of differentiation and identification, and their values to capture the verbal and non-verbal. In addition, with the works of Lygia Pape, we understand how “social glasses” influence the reading and creation of meaning about them.
