Palliative care (PC) is an approach that enhances the quality of life for patients and their families facing life-threatening illnesses, through the prevention and relief of suffering by early identification and treatment of pain and other physical, psychosocial, and spiritual issues. The aspects of palliative care for children are similar to those for adults, but there is a greater emotional impact for both the family and the healthcare provider when dealing with a child in the terminal stage of illness. Objective: To conduct a literature review on the approach to palliative care in the pediatric population with terminal illness. Methodology: Searches were conducted in the PubMed, Scielo, and Google Scholar databases. Scientific articles addressing the research objective, published between 2013 and 2023, in Portuguese and English with freely available full-text were included. Results and Discussion: Four thematic approaches were identified: delivering bad news; quality of life for the patient and their family during palliative care; emotional preparedness of the team in facing occurrences in this context; how children and adolescents understand and behave in palliative care. Conclusion: Approaching these themes in an integrated and patient- and family-centered manner is essential to provide the best possible support in such a sensitive and challenging phase.
