Resumo
The environment of Higher Education Institution is a place of special resonance, where spaces may be able to convey meanings and generate life experiences that can contribute significantly to student learning and construction of a society. Aware of the relationships between education, society and architecture, this research was developed in an attempt to provoke discussion on how the scenario of historical transformations in which we live requires changes in the way that Higher Education Institution spaces are understood and designed. For this purpose, we study the case of the Main Campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), located in the city of Chicago a project designed by Mies van der Rohe in 1938, a paradigmatic example of modernist architecture of university buildings; and the building of the new student center the McCormick Tribune Campus Center (MTCC), opened in 2003, an intervention of architect Rem Koolhaas - aiming to reinvigorate student life and activity in the campus, which was in process of depreciation and abandonment. Based on these projects designed in different and emblematic periods, we aim to analyze the redefinition of spaces in the campus and its buildings in view of contemporary social and educational transformations, and the need for adaptation to new values.
