dc.description.abstractThis thesis, developed in the Architecture and Urbanism Post-Graduation Program, held in the Presbyterian Mackenzie University, is inserted in the urban morphology theoretical field, which considers the city as an object likely to be studied, at the time, from its ordinary physical shape. Hence, it investigates greater longevity urban elements, using as interpretation key the concept of morphologic persistence. Taking this proposed goal into consideration, the thesis object is the morphological process of urban layout stagnation, working with the hypothesis that the public urban and bio dimensional elements, mainly the street, are, among others, the longest-lasting ones. It was chosen to continue with such proposal from the study of primitive and preexistent paths, analyzing a suburban highway located in the northeast part in the city of Vitória, Espirito Santo, named Maruípe Road. The methodological strategy used is supported by the hypothetical-deductive method and by the historic-geographical and process-typological approaches to urban morphology, applying comparison procedures, structural analysis and hyper-design. The research data are worked in a regressive time line, ranging the Brazilian historical periods, through documental cartographic, iconographic and textual sources. Aiming at reasoning presentation and argumentation, this thesis is structured in five chapters: the morphologic approaches in the urban shape study, the theoreticalconceptual matrix that deals with the longevity of urban elements, the methodological strategy, the analysis of the empiric object and the conclusions, which consider interpretations in three morphologic persistence (and permanence) scales: territory, city and region. From the interpretation of this scales the initial investigation hypothesis is confirmed.eng
