INTRODUCTION: Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is considered the most prevalent sexually transmitted disease in the population, being able to induce the expression of neoplastic phenomenon on epithelial cells. Due to its predilection for stratified tissue, it can manifest itself on hemorrhoids, showing the importance of a careful evaluation of the tissue removed in the hemorrhoidectomy. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate the presence of HPV in the hemorrhoidal tissue removed during hemorrhoidectomy and estimate the incidence of HPV on external hemorrhoids by age and sex as well. METHODS: Observational retrospective study with immunohistochemistry analysis with P16 antibodies to verify the presence of HPV in hemorrhoidal tissue of 44 patients. RESULTS: Of the 44 cases analyzed, 26 were female and 84% of the patients had the age of 36 years or more. The patients that had HPV found on tissue had a mean age of 51,62 years and for the counterpart a mean of 45,35 years. not showing significant difference between the groups (p=0,13). Although the female group had a positivity of 54% compared to the 39% of the male group, it didn’t result in any significant difference between them (p=0,33). CONCLUSION: Approximately half of the patients that had koilocytes expressed the presence of HPV on the same tissue. This infers that it could be beneficial to have a follow-up and search of HPV on the intention of detecting precancerous lesions.
