A recurring phenomenon is the use of verisimilitude rhetoric. Dom Casmurro, by Machado de Assis, deals with the nonconformity of the main character, who is already sexagenarian and reclusive. He makes efforts to unite his youth in his old age, writing him what becomes the story of a life, in which he succumbs to the jealousy, denied his son, exiled his wife, becoming a lonely and sad individual, but who tries through his autobiography, convince himself and convince us readers that he was the victim of adultery. The purpose of the work is to start from the accusation of the crime of adultery to face the rhetoric of verisimilitude and interpret the novel as a criminal process. We begin with a brief historical-literary panorama of the theme of female adultery. We continue with a summary of the novel allowing the reader to know the most relevant points of the work. We proceed with the critical fortune from Machadian scholars and readers to understand possible interpretations of the novel. We investigate the rhetoric of verisimilitude that fosters the adultery charge of Capitolina Santiago. Finally, we look at the novel as a criminal case and we will prolate a sentence. From such studies it is possible to observe that the difficulty of the character in dealing with his jealousy makes him succumb, but also when handling the pen and exposing his autobiography / piece of accusation, ingeniously makes a great discourse of verisimilitude, that although subjective , does not bring happiness or moral redemption.
