The present academic article addresses the historical panorama about the discussion on sustainable development, focusing on Brazil and Europe. Aiming at the decarbonization of Planet Earth, several mechanisms were created to encourage companies and countries to invest in sustainable technologies with reduced content of pollutants in the atmosphere. This article points out the difficulties faced to implement the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) in Brazil, in addition to reporting its performance in combating pollution. The relationship between Brazil and Europe regarding the trading of Carbon Credits (CERs) and the challenges in their regulation are highlighted, as well as the dependence of Brazilian CDM projects on the European Union Emissions Trading Scheme (EU ETS).
