Resumo
Rotary regenerators, also known as enthalpic wheels, are heat exchangers whose function is to recover process heat. The objective of the present work was to establish an operational strategy to increase the energy efficiency of the air conditioning system of the Physical Chemical Laboratory (LAFIQ) located in Fiocruz. It was a case study and a literature review was done in order to understand the assumptions of the usage of the enthalpic wheel. A model based on mass and energy balances was proposed and served as a basis for the experimental investigation. Correlations were proposed based on information about effectiveness of enthalpic wheels retrieved from the literature. 2 A simulator was created with the purpose of predicting thermal loads. The results show that the maximum latent effectiveness occurs at the highest rotation speed of the wheel. It was also concluded that the enthalpy wheel is effective in increasing the energy efficiency of the air conditioning system, as the consumption without the device was 125 kW and dropped to 75 kW, resulting in a gain of 40% when the same external and return air flowrates were used. It is also shown that a large increase in the reduction of energy consumption can be achieved if external air flowrate is decreased.
