Os edifício de apartamentos em Fortaleza (1935-1986): dos conceitos universais aos exemplos singulares

Abstract

The current research studies the apartment building in the city of Fortaleza in the period

between 1935, its genesis, and 1986, the beginning of the vertical integration. Aware that

the architectural object is linked to cultural, social, economic and climate factors, and that

the architect’s education has a important role in the interpretation of these determinants, the

research focused in the analysis of these factors and of the built constructions.

The relevance of this thesis is based on the importance of the apartment building in the urban

area of Fortaleza in the contemporaneity, especially in the east area of the city where in some

neighborhoods, represents almost 90% of the housing, and with a strong tendency to expansion.

The work assumes that the study of the building’s transformation through time and space is

crucial to formulate a critical foundation in order to contribute to the architect’s practice.

It was identified four different periods: the antecedent, characterized as a long period with few

representative buildings; the modern period, featured by the activity of the pioneer architects;

the period characterized by the predominance of the buildings built on pilotis on a brutalism

language; and the fourth period regarded as the beginning of the post-modernism with the

construction of isolated towers.

Finally, for each analyzed period it was identified the architecture’s transforming factors, the

universal concepts and the local specificities. In conclusion, it was observed that the architect’s

education was particularly important in the intermediations with the local agents and in the

transformation of the apartment buildings.

A pesquisa estuda o edifício de apartamentos na cidade de Fortaleza, no período de 1935, sua

gênese, a 1986, início da consolidação da verticalização. Cientes de que o objeto arquitetônico

se vincula a fatores culturais, sociais, econômicos e climáticos do lugar, e de que a formação

do arquiteto tem um papel relevante na interpretação desses determinantes, a pesquisa focou

na análise destes fatores e das obras edi cadas.

A relevância desta tese se sustenta na importância do edifício de apartamentos no espaço

urbano de Fortaleza na contemporaneidade, especialmente na área leste da cidade onde, em

alguns bairros, representa quase 90% das moradias, e com forte tendência à expansão.

Parte-se do pressuposto de que o estudo das transformações dos edifícios – no tempo e

no espaço – é de fundamental importância para gerar um embasamento crítico de modo a

contribuir para a práxis arquitetônica.

Veri ca-se a ocorrência de quatro períodos distintos no espaço de tempo estudado: os

antecedentes, período longo e com poucos exemplares; o moderno, que teve início com a

atuação dos arquitetos pioneiros; o da predominância dos edifícios sobre pilotis em linguagem

brutalista; e o da consolidação das torres isoladas e início do pós-modernismo.

Identi ca-se, em cada período analisado, os fatores transformadores da arquitetura, seus

conceitos universais e as especi cidades locais. Conclui-se que, na cidade de Fortaleza, no

período estudado, a formação do arquiteto foi de especial importância nas intermediações

com os agentes locais e nas transformações do edifício de apartamentos.
