Resumo
Executive functions are related to an individual's ability to engage in targeted and goal-directed behaviors, are especially required in the face of new situations or circumstances that require behavioral flexibility for the demands of the environment. Executive skills are related to activations in the prefrontal cortex and its connections. Despite the large number of individuals who present complaints of executive dysfunctions in the social environment, few studies have been able to study this issue and investigate proposals to stimulate these functions in a sample of adolescents. In order to do so, this study aims to verify the effectiveness of an intervention proposal called Goal Management Training, which is constantly studied in samples of individuals who had Acquired Brain Injury in the prefrontal region of the brain. The study included 25 adolescents with complaints of executive dysfunctions in the social environment who underwent a neuropsychological evaluation for baseline formation. Immediately after they were allocated, randomly in a control group, who underwent psychoeducation sessions, and experimental group, which was stimulated through the Goal Management Training in eight sessions. The participants then went through another evaluation and a follow-up of 4 weeks. The results showed an improvement in executive functions, more specifically a large effect according to the Hedges' scores and a significant effect according to ANOVA analysis in the ecological activity that evaluates operational memory, IQ measures, flexibility and inhibition immediately after the intervention. In the follow-up evaluation, effects of flexibility and inhibition were observed, medium-size effect in planning and problem solving, and short-term verbal memory. However, due to the limitations of this study, the findings should be interpreted with some caution.
