dc.description.abstractSocial, political and economic changes have been promoted by the globalization growth leading to the denationalization of markets, standardization of lifestyles and the increase of disease risks, now internationally transferable. Under that perspective food safety problems related to animal health, such as the avian flu and the Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy, the "mad cow disease", have influenced the international trade policies in many countries, encouraging the establishment of safety requirements for imported animal products. Globalization has also increased the probability of transmission of infectious diseases among the nations, and Brazil has implemented the Cattle and Buffalo Identification and Certification System (SISBOV), in 2002, to ensure the traceability of exported beef and buffalo meat. This study has evaluated the beef production chain actors?' knowledge about SISBOV and its objectives. For that purpose, it was used the qualitative and quantitative methodology of the Discourse of the Collective Subject (DCS), applied to a sample of 34 actors of the production chain. SISBOV is not properly known by most of the production chain actors, it is perceived as inappropriate, expensive, with failures in its design and operation. It was concluded that misinformation is an additional factor to explain the low adherence to the system, besides the asymmetry of information between livestock farmers and slaughterhouses, and the oligopsonic approach of the beef market.
