As principais cepas utilizadas eram do gênero Lactobacillus e Bifdobacterium.
Probiotics are living microorganisms that provide health benefits to the host. The effect of probiotics on the immune response has been widely studied. Most in vitro studies suggest that probiotics may stimulate specific and non-specific immune responses. The objective of this study was to evaluate if probiotic supplementation in infants and children has influence on their immunity through a literature review. To perform this research the scientific data platform "Pubmed" was consulted using the following words "immunity", "probiotic" and "supplement". Nine intervention studies in infants and children performed in the last 5 years were selected. Among the evaluated articles, 75% showed that the supplementation of a probiotic had a positive influence on immunity. The main strains used were of the genus Lactobacillus and Bifdobacterium. The studies evaluated have shown that probiotics may have a positive influence on immunity in infants and children, but not enough to be widely recommended. In all those that had a significant increase in immunity, they emphasized that it is necessary to know the mechanism of action by probiotic strains act and also more studies must be performed to prove the efficacy of supplementation.
