Resumo
The aim of this study was to provide a baseline research on the benthic fauna of Sao Sebastiao Channel, an area yet insufficiently explored despite its importance in terms of oil pollution. In October 1991, benthic samples were collected with a van-Veen grab at 15 stations in the middle part of the channel where an oil terminal, a submarine sewage system and a commercial harbour are installed. Abiotic factors such as depth, water temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and sediment textural parameters were measured. A total of 269 species/groups were identified, with Polychaetes being the most abundant and diversified group. Principal Components Analysis (PCA) revealed three recognizable benthic assemblages related to different sediment texture and depths.
