Despite this characteristic, it is currently observed in the culture of the country the maintenance of a principle of diversity that constitutes the nation since its mythical times. The aim of this work is to reflect on how the concepts of “semiosphere” and “forms of life” can contribute to the examination of a culture that had to articulate languages and meanings from outside, absorbs and transforms them in order to give them a new identity. Thus, we will analyse a version of the original myth of the island, as well as excerpts from a contemporary Timorese novel. We will observe the presence of a culture that privileges the values of diversity in articulation with the external elements, but without leaving aside the traces that characterize the local culture, both at the level of content and expression of the discourses examined.
