Resumo
A study was conducted to demonstrate the directionality of an random laser (RL) using insertion of suspension of rutile (TiO2) particles in a solution of rhodamine 6G in ethylene glycol into the hollow core of a photonic crystal fiber (PCF). It was found that RLs have several characteristics of conventional lasers like well-defined threshold, linewidth reduction, and a degree of coherence and photon statistics. The PCF used for the study had core diameter, cladding pitch, and cladding air-filling fraction of 10.9 μm, 3.8 μm, and >90 percent. A new figure of merit was introduced during the study, which indicated that the random fiber laser (RFL) was two order of magnitude more efficient than bulk RLs. It was observed that the RLs can be used to examine various phenomena like Anderson localization, the glassy behavior of light, and astrophysical lasers.
