© PASOS Revista de Turismo y Patrimonio Cultural. This study is directed at describing the process of strengthening community tourism on Ilha Diana, in the City of Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, Brazil, and to understand how the intervention and identification of means to guarantee and safeguard the preservation of local traditions through sustainable community tourism took place. The research strategy used a single-case study, consisting of a protocol that used participant observation, bibliographical research, and documentary research. The means used to maintain and assist the preservation of traditions considered local were identified with the idea of a model for community and tourism strengthening. Key guidelines for community visitation programmes were identified as bases for local policies aimed at promoting socio-environmental development and proposing conceptual and practical bases for establishing management models for tourist destinations with a focus on the conservation of tangible and intangible heritage.
