All rights reserved. When Human Rights came through the process of internationalization, they were conceded as universal, stipulating a pattern of an ethic irreducible. Diverging from this absolute position of universalism, the argument that relativizes the universal application, is called cultural relativism, an opposite theory that analyzes cultural aspects of one society to achieve the conceptions of Human Rights. Intending to discuss the academic debate between both theories by presenting topics such as the Asian Values that translate intrinsic values of a society that prioritizes the collectivism over individualism and the cultural argument present in practices of indigenous tribes in Brazil and African tribes; also, a mix of cultural aspect and religious aspect that exist in the sharia law and Islam. Thus, facing such diversity of cultures, the argument of multiculturalism demonstrates a possible end to the debate between universalism and cultural relativism. | |
