dc.description.abstract | This paper presents a study of metal retention capacity of a compacted saprolitic soil derived from gneiss from the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, aiming to assess its geoenvironmental performance as liner for waste disposal sites. Column tests were carried out with solutions of cadmium and lead at pH 1, 3 and 5.5 in soil specimens compacted at the optimum water content at standard Proctor energy. Additional tests with chloride as a tracer were also performed. Results show that cadmium, a very mobile cation, is not adsorved at pH 1, but is significantly retained at pH 3 and pH 5.5. Lead is retained at all tested pH values. This is unexpected considering the mineralogy of the soil: its main constituents are mica, kaolinite and quartz, none of which impart expressive retention capacity to the soil. The promising results are being further investigated by means of batch and diffusion tests. | |
