A computational model based on cellular automaton (CA) is developed for studying the spreading depression (SD) phenomenon. CA cells correspond to neurons which are mainly locally connected. The influence of the parameter values in the spatiotemporal dynamics is investigated in order to obtain ways of reducing, or even preventing, occurrences of SD. © World Scientific Publishing Company.
