Such question leads to the objectives of the analysis: (i) to characterize formalist linguistics in Brazilian linguistics; (ii) to delimit scientific guidelines of these formalisms; (iii) to identify social processes of institutionalization to aforesaid linguistics. The corpus consists of (a) journal articles, scientific bulletin texts, reviews, historical review books and chapters; (b) theses and dissertations; (c) manuals; (d) official documents; (e) testimonies, interviews. The material was selected and analyzed through three phases: 1st) heuristic: definition of periodization and selection/treatment of the corpus; 2nd) hermeneutic: establishment of ruling guidelines for historiographic analysis; 3rd) expository: presentation of results in a historiographic narrative. In the 1960s-1970s, Brazilian linguistics was largely a linguistics of domain of structures through the adoption of methodological instruments that identified systematic regularities (at different levels that highlighted the structural nature of languages) and supported rhetorics in defense of scientific positions. This historical characterization is defended in this article.
