First, experimental tests were performed using L-shaped laminates with a U-shaped bonding configuration. These strips were bonded in two positions: between and over the inner stirrups. In addition, a numerical model was calibrated based on the laboratory study. Then, shear span (B/d), compressive strength of the concrete, diameter of the stirrups, and positioning of the CFRP were studied. All beams where the laminates were bonded over the stirrups showed shear failure. However, for beams bonded in the area between stirrups, some failed by bending and others by shear forces. The parameters that had the most significant effect on CFRP debonding and shear strength were the location of the strengthening, the shear span, and the strength class of the concrete. Thus, the location of the strengthening around the transverse reinforcement changes the cracking mechanism of shear strengthened beams with the EBR system.
