dc.description.abstractThe pattern of variation of two structural variables, density and diversity, of the taxocoenosis Amphipoda was described and analyzed in relation to several environmental factors. The amphipod fauna was surveyed at 18 stations located between 10 and 120 m in depth over the continental shelf of Ubatuba, Sāo Paulo State, Southeastern Brazil. The samples were taken seasonally from October 1985 to July 1986. A total of 2918 amphipods belonging to 42 species was sampled. Amphipod assemblages from the outer shelf presented higher values of density and diversity. In contrast, the lowest values were presented by the southern inner shelf assemblage The results suggested that the pattern of diversity and density presented by the amphipod assemblages in the area is strongly influenced by sediment factors such as silt content and sorting coefficient and hydrological variables such as temperature.
