We describe the main challenges related to problem-solving in student learning regarding software development as the utilization of approaches applied in many companies. We report the challenges encountered by both teachers and students when adopting an API-First development approach in the early cohorts of the Software Residency Program. Moreover, we discuss the configuration of the SRP and the impacts of the solution adopted, along with how the restructuring of the knowledge topics sequence and the new directions provide to students have improved the learning process through the PBL methodology. From adjustments in the sequential arrangement of approached topics in modules of SRP, we enhance the student engagement, the quality of delivered artifacts, reduce dropout of students, and contributed to the effective development of soft skills.
