All rights reserved. This article analyzes the issue of senescence in the short story “A velha” (2020), by Teolinda Gersão. The aim is to show how this narrative, based on a writing that touches on the uncanny and uses irony as a rhetorical device, raises an important reflection on aging and the female condition in contemporary times. To do so, it uses studies focused on the most current Portuguese narrative, such as those by Real (2012); on the issue of female senescence in a sociocultural dimension (Fernandes and Garcia 2010); and on irony in literary discourse, according to Gobbi (2011), among others. | |
