Manoel Alves highlights four distinct periods in the history of Catholic education in recent decades. The first period, from 1945 to 1962 is still marked by the conflict between Catholics and Liberals of the past decades, and the struggle of public school vs. private schools. The second period ran from 1962 to 1979. At this time there was the boom of private schools, which promoted schools with family values and missionary focus. Another period ran from 1979 until the promulgation of the new constitution in Brazil in 1988. The fourth and final period started in 1988 and lasted until the present day, marked by reflection of the Catholic Church on the importance of its pastoral presence in the schools. The chapter points out the importance of religious education.
