© 2021, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.This analysis presents the conception of woman in Denis Diderot’s materialist thought, considering the philosopher’s perspective on the female psychic-physiological constitution and the moral and social position of women in the Enlightenment century as presented in his essay On Women (1772). For Diderot, women suffered a twofold oppression: from their physical constitution and from the historical and cultural condition which always ascribed them a secondary role.
