In this work we present a mineralogical analysis of natural clay deposits from Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. The samples were sieved to prepare a homogeneous powder representative of the natural soil. This powder was extruded to form bricks and submitted to a firing process in a furnace with controlled heating and cooling rates. Brick samples were prepared with firing temperatures varying from 300°C to 1200°C. X-ray powder diffraction data allowed quantitative analysis by the Rietveld method using the refinement program GSAS. The Rietveld analysis showed that the ceramic high resistance after treatment at 1200°C is associated with the formation of mullite, cristobalite and hematite phases. In contrast to the analysis of the bulk material, Rietveld quantitative analysis for the clay, silt and sand fractions revealed quantifiable concentrations of kaolinite, illite, gibbsite, goethite, quartz, anorthoclase and muscovite. The effect of the thermal treatment in the clay structural properties was also analyzed by infra-red spectroscopy. © by Oldenbourg Wissenschaftsverlag, München.
