The analysis begins with the innovation process, highlighting the relationship between investments in Research and Development (R&D) and the protection of Intellectual Property (IP) assets through patents. It is argued that while patents incentivize innovation, they can also restrict access to innovative products. The study examines the concentration of the innovation process in developed countries and the challenges for developing nations like Brazil, with deficiencies in their national innovation systems. This leads to a scenario of external dependence, influencing the strategies of national industries regarding local production. The importance of protecting innovation for national development is analyzed, considering investments in R&D, the patent system, and the current challenges for the healthcare sector.
