Abstract
© 2022 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved. As modern society progresses, advancements in digital and personalized healthcare have evolved from the more analogues ways to an inherent need for point-of-care devices. Besides, the evolution of miniaturized electronics or silicon-based technology, microfluidics has also been instrumental to the development these flexible and wearable devices and has amassed intense interest over the last few decades. In this chapter, the use of microfluidics for sample collection (sampling) in wearables is discussed, with a brief description of the approaches for microfluidic device fabrication, as well as the various types of sample matrices (bodily fluids) that can be collected. Then signal-amplification strategies for wearables are presented, focusing on the unique characteristics and integration of novel nanomaterials.
