The central objective was to highlight the poet's role in strengthening East Timor national identity. At a time when the West has been facing the crises of global capitalism (Castells, 2018), and dealing with the idea of liquid identities (Bauman, 2005), we have stated from the hypothesis that poetic language, by reflecting the social, political, and historical contexts, serves to reinforce the preservation of collective memory, a concept planned by authors such as Candau (2018), contributing in the case of East Timor, to the renewal of identity paradigms, in particular, for the generations that grew up after the country's independence. Based on a case study and bibliographical research, we have sought to demonstrate how poetry in East Timor, including written in Portuguese, a language of resistance, has become an important tool for preserving Timorese culture and identity.
