All rights reserved.Jugular paragangliomas (JP), also known as glomus jugulare tumors (GJ), are the most common lesions of the jugular foramen region, representing approximately 80% of all tumors in this region. This benign and highly vascularized neoplasm can be found in the head and neck, mediastinum, abdomen and pelvis as they arise from the paraganglia of the autonomic nervous system. These are complex and challenging lesions involving the skull base, that can exhibit intense local aggressiveness with invasion and erosion of the temporal and occipital bones, tympanic cavity, lower cranial nerves (IX, X, XI and XII), encasement and invasion of skull base major vessels, like the carotid artery and jugular bulb and vein, and intracranial and cervical extension. Its treatment demands great expertise from neurosurgeons due the complexity of this region and skull base approaches.
