© Cadernos de Dereito Actual. The influence of the Protestant Reformation on the creation of the Modern State is undeniable, and its reflexes can be felt to this day. Most reformers, however, were limited to the theological aspect, not expanding their studies and teachings beyond the purely religious field. In this context, the work of João Calvino stands out, because the author went beyond pure theological theorizing, developing a fruitful work that dealt with several other themes, and especially the State and Law. As demonstrated in this article, Calvin developed a whole theory of State and Law in his "Institutes of the Christian Religion," and dealt with a lot of issues related to: (a) the role of the Christian in relation to the state; (b) the role of the state in sustaining social cohesion; and (c) the role of the state. Representatives of the State (especially the figure of the "magistrate"). In his other works, João Calvin tried to explain the concepts developed in his main work and developed other aspects of his legal and political theory.
