All rights reserved.The teaching of human physiology in Basic Education is based on the isolation and decontextualization of organs and physiological systems, without reflections on the relationships between them, which limits students’ learning. However, the systemic theory expresses that the specific characteristics of a system exist solely because of the relationships between its components and the external environment. Thus, such concepts can be applied to promote an integrated teaching of human physiology and tobacco use is an issue that has potential contributions. Therefore, this study aimed to identify elements of the systemic perspective in textual productions made by high school students, after a series of classes on integrated human physiology based on problem-situations about tobacco use. To that end, five classes on human physiology, based on a systemic perspective, were taught to a high school class at a state school in São Paulo and, at the end, textual productions were collected from nine students regarding the subject. The responses were classified within three categories containing the main ideas of this theory. The results suggested that eight out of nine students showed a systemic and contextualized view of human physiology, since they associated it to environmental and social factors and to smoking, relating some physiological processes.
