dc.description.abstractThis chapter introduces basic concepts about heat treatment, beginning with Fe-C diagrams, isothermal transformation and continuous cooling transformation diagrams, which are necessary to understand the transformation phenomenon in steels. Microstructures resulting from heat treatment and banding are also shown. Hardenability, mainly based in Jominy curves, is presented as well as the influence of alloying elements. Quenching is briefly discussed. This is an introductory chapter and such subjects are discussed in greater depth in other chapters in this volume. © 2014 Elsevier Ltd All rights reserved.
