This study aimed to identify factors associated with self-stigma among caregivers of 176 students with ASD from the public school system of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro. Among the 122 respondents who completed self-stigma questionnaires (Affiliate Stigma Scale), the results revealed a high prevalence of self-stigma (63%). It was found that this self-stigmatization is statistically linked to mental health issues, stress resulting from the daily challenges of caring for their children, and reduced quality of life, characterized by difficulty in obtaining assistance and support for their child’s needs and decreased well-being. It is recommended to implement programs and interventions that aim to mitigate mental health issues and reduce caregiver stress.
