All rights reserved.The article analyzes the institutionalization process of the Social and Solidarity Economy (ESS) agenda in Latin America, studying the regional integration processes of UNASUL and MERCOSUL. The research question consists of answering how SSE is used in regional political cooperation in South America, as well as its impacts on the construction of regional governance structures for social development. It is hypothesized that the regional processes in the institutional contexts of South America use a restricted conception of SSE that is defined as an instrument of social policy to combat poverty. This limits the transformative potential of the ESS agenda. The proposal is an expansion of the concept of SSE as a strengthening of socio-productive practices as an alternative to extrativist development in the region.
