The purposes of this article are: a) to present a review of the concepts of exploitation and exploration; b) to create groups that depict categories of strategic attributes related to these concepts; c) to present an empirical qualitative study with three Brazilian companies, to analyze the attributes related to these two concepts, to characterize them as exploiters, explorers companies or companies that use both strategic approaches regarding knowledge use; d) to allow insights to the development of measurement instruments for both concepts. As one result, two main perspectives were identified concerning the internal environment and the external environment. Within these two perspectives six dimensions are presented: innovation practices, knowledge practices, strategic focus, competition, organizational efficiency and partnerships. From this was developed a research instrument, used for in-depth interviews with the three companies from different economic sectors: retail, services and technology. The results allowed the identification of the prevalent knowledge strategy orientation, exploiter or explorer, in these companies.
