This chapter will provide an overview of endocannabinoid role on social reward and motivation, describing the presence of cannabinoid receptors in key structures involved in social–emotional processing, biochemical events involving endocannabinoids, focusing on anandamide and 2-arachidonoyl glycerol and its interaction with other neurotransmitter system. Also, we describe behavioral tests for assessing social motivation and present results concerning pharmacological and genetic endocannabinoid manipulation. Accumulated evidence has been showing that endocannabinoids effects are context-dependent and coordinate with the oxytocin, endogenous opioid, and dopaminergic systems, involving limbic brain areas, such as the nucleus accumbens and amygdala.
