© 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG.Over the past decades, the hemocompatibility of polymeric materials that are used in contact with blood remains one of the main challenges in the development of medical devices. As the interactions of material with blood are strongly dependent on the chemical and physical properties of the material’s surface, surface modification has been an interesting strategy used to improve their hemocompatibility. In this work, a method to modify the surface of polyurethanes (PU) membranes was investigated. Therefore, the benzalkonium heparinate complex grafting over PU surface using UV light approach was employed. The PU membranes produced were characterized by a set of techniques as infrared spectroscopy, colorimetry, contact angle and surface micrographs. The results showed that the presence of heparin grafted onto the surface produced the modification of the structure as presented by FTIR results, as well as the increasing of the hydrophilicity was verified. These changes suggested that modifications reduce the chances of protein adsorption on the PU surface.
